The reconstruction: a still
Given: A photograph, without its place or its dateSolved for: The place and the minute, and when the light returns
A photograph, placed in its minute.
What a location manager receives about one photograph: where it was taken, at what minute and between which years, what will stand in the frame on the production's date, whether the place can be shot under its rules, and when the light does it again, in six answers.
This sample is the reconstruction reading: an observation, here a photograph, read back to the place and the minute it was made. It is sold to producers.
The sun returns here as the clock of a frame; the wedding reads it as a bearing on a date.
01 · What was asked
Something happened: where, when and how?
The photograph
A director hands the location manager a photograph taken years ago on a phone, without location data: a brick quay, a bascule bridge, low sun down the water. The production wants the shot again on 20 May 2027, with 14 trucks. Where is it, at what minute did the light do that, and can it be shot again?
02 · What was read
One photograph, six answers
The photograph laid over the region as it stands: the candidate quays falling away, the sun sweeping to the minute the shadows match.
01 · The place
Quay B
Of the 3 candidate quays in the region, one fits: its quay, bridge and roofline match the terrain and the buildings within 0.4 m.
- Quay A: 6.5 m off
- Quay B: 0.4 m off
- Quay C: 11.2 m off
- Sourced and graded in the report
02 · The minute
19:12
The shadows against the buildings put the sun at a bearing of 270° and 12° above the horizon: at 19:12 on 14 April and on 28 August, each year.
- Bearing 270°
- Elevation 12°
- The shadows in the frame
- Sourced and graded in the report
03 · The years
2016–2018
The photograph was taken between 2016 and 2018: the frame shows what stood only in those years.
- A scaffold in the frame, permitted in 2016
- A building in the frame, demolished in 2018
- A tree in the frame, felled in 2021
- Sourced and graded in the report
04 · The date
2 in the frame
On 20 May 2027 the frame holds a scaffold, permitted until 30 June 2027; a boat at a registered mooring.

05 · The rules
19:00–07:00
The bridge serves shipping by day and stays down from 19:00 to 07:00, which gives the shot its hours. A filming permit needs 15 days' notice, the 14 trucks load between 07:00 and 10:00, amplified sound stops at 22:00, and the power truck, Euro 5, may not enter a zone that asks Euro 6.
- Bridge down 19:00–07:00
- Filming permit, 15 days' notice
- Loading 07:00–10:00
- Zone Euro 6
- Amplified sound until 22:00
- Sourced and graded in the report
06 · The light again
28 August 2027
The light returns on 28 August 2027 at 19:13, with the bridge down and nothing in the frame; on 14 April 2027 at 19:12 the scaffold still stands in the frame. The dates are handed on as the anticipation.
- 14 April 2027 · 19:12
- 28 August 2027 · 19:13

03 · What it changed
Any image, in its minute
It is sold to producers and their location managers. A scout who knows the region may find the quay; what the reading adds is the minute, the years and the rules of the place together, and the same reading places any image in its minute: a frame from an archive, a still for a remake, a picture a client wants to match.
